In March, Silke and I were fortunate enough to make the boat trip over to Santa Cruz Island, off the coast of Santa Barbara, CA. For the first day, we set up camp about a mile away from the pier, under a stand of eucalyptus trees, and then set off on a dayhike to Smuggler's Cover to the south. That night, we hiked up to Cavern Point for an awesome sunset. The second day we set off on our grueling 11.5 mile hike up and over the mountain to the other side of the island. The grass was green, the weathe was perfect, and there were no mosquitos, but having to carry 2 days worth of water up and over 1500 feet, with minimum shade for 11 miles is a bit offsetting. The second night of camping, however, was under a stand of island oaks, with a crescent moon hanging low in the sky. On the boat ride back we saw at least 10,000 dolphins swimming along our boat!
