A few years before this trip, I had promised Beatrice that the next time I left the States would be to visit Germany, so when I found out I had an extra week of vacation per year, I booked a flight to Berlin. It wasn't too difficult getting around. I knew enough German to at least buy food and train tickets and most of the Berliners speak English. It did start to get a bit confusing when I kept choosing East German cities to travel to, where only a handful of people learned English while they were growing up. My travels south from Berlin went through Wittenberg, Eisenach, Wurzburg, Bamberg, and Nurnberg rounded out the first part of my trip before meeting up with Beatrice in Munich. From Munich, we went to the Dachau concentration camp, and then to her home town of Ingolstadt for a few days where I was given seom free beer glasses from the Ingolstadt Braurei. :) From Ingolstadt I trained over to Zurich for a night. Basel was next on the list with tons of architecture to see. Of course, I had to get to the Alps at some point, so I finished off by going to Interlaken and hiking into the frosty cold above Gimmelwald.
