John Muir Trail
June 2003
The first of many backpacking trips for Andrew and I, we were also joined by Andrew's friend Chris. We tackled the most popular portion of the John Muir Trail running from Devil's Postpile in the Eastern Sierras, up and over Donahue Pass into Tuolumne Meadows then turning south and down into Yosemite Valley. All told, we managed 56 miles in under 6 days, 5 really, since the first and last days we only hiked for a few hours. The best part of the trip had to be in the first few days, when our contact with other people was limited. As we approached Yosemite, we started to encounter a lot more dayhikers along the trail, which seemed to take something away from the trip. By the time we reached Little Yosemite Valley, with it's bear boxes and bonfires, we were ready to get out. The last 2-3 miles of our descent into the valley, we were jogging with 30 lb packs on just to be done with it. Perhaps the Curry Village pizza waiting at the bottom had something to do with it as well..
