This trip was had no planning whatsover except for the first part, Arcosanti, and the very end, Boulder Mountain Ranch. Vanessa and I drove with a map on our laps, picking out the next stop. By the end, we had driven a huge loop around the Grand Canyon without actually going through it. Arcosanti was probably the most interesting place on the trip. A semi-self sustaining community, it fit my mental picture of a futuristic martian colony perched upon a mesa. The Escalante region was also a favorite. An insanely steep road dropped off the mesa from Boulder Mountain Ranch down into the plain. At one point, the road was on a sadle, with thousand foot drops on either side. Just south of here was the Hole-in-the-Rock Road we drove across to get to the slot canyons. While relatively small by Arizona standards, the Escalante slots an very tight. In some places, we had to walk sideways with the rock walls squeezing our chest and back.
